STRENGTH

Online allows:

Better use of visuals — photo slide shows, sound slide shows, videos, all-color.

Interaction — comments, Twitter, Facebook, polls.

Motion — the use of Tabs, such as SoundOff, allows multiple images in smaller space and the user is attracted to the movement.

Change — usually in Premiere, multiple stories have good display art but the print version has only so much space. One usually gets top play. But online, the editor can move stories for better display during the week. The editor has Top Story to use at the top of the section front with another Top Story down the page in a Column Splitter and at the bottom. Think balance on the page.

Exposure — with a Tab on the front, the editor can tout inside stories. The stories selected must be equal in depth or the Tab will jump up and down.

Immediacy — the Fletcher incident coverage is a great example. How should it be displayed on the front? Should it start on the front with BEST art and TOP story and jump inside to Blotter. After all, it was a campus blotter-type event.
WARNING: Be aware of days and dates. If The Ranger story says something will be on Tuesday, on Wednesday either have an update or change to the date? If it's something that will happen on Tuesday, then why keep the story on Wednesday?

Service features — the Music Calendar and Rotten Tomatoes on Premiere, the New York Times and FOXNEWS .COM on News, the daily editorial cartoons on Opinion, sports schedules on Pulse all give users a way to expand their knowledge on our site.

And Meet the DJs can be an ongoing thing. Maybe update information on ones already there such as Sound of the Week or something. Also, the service stories at the bottom of News should be emphasized someplace on the front side.

Multimedia — think of the BEST use for the feature. Sounds, sights, background. Think STORY. If using sound, the feature that Tyler did about veggies is a good example. It doesn't have to be complex. Same thing for videos. Voiceovers need to be pithy. Gather personal information about voiceover interviews to be complete.

Here's a good video. Click on it to get the full size.

Here's a free service: Monster College. It could be on the side of News or another section.  It lists jobs in the San Antonio area. Check it out.  It will be placed in an HTML element.

And, I think this is appropriate to run front page at the beginning of the semester.

See other video projects from the past in The Ranger Online, using Picasa.

How about a map showing parking off but near campus? Google maps are easy to do, and much information can be added to the user's benefit.

Another service feature that can be placed on the side of Blotter with tout on front.

Here's hoping this helps. Good luck.
